Fundamentals

Fundamentals class aims to provide students with the core skills needed to build a strong foundation. The class is generally at a slower pace so that students can concentrate on building strong basic or kihon-waza fundamental Aikido skills which is the surest path to gain technical proficiency. There is no forward ukemi or rolling techniques in this class. This class is good training for students of all levels, but especially helpful for beginners or people who are coming back from a layoff or injury.

Regular

In Regular class, dynamic movement is added to the foundations developed in Fundamentals class. These basic skills when combined with dynamic movement enabling the practitioner to create Ki no nagare or the flow of ki within their techniques. Dynamic movement with a faster pace helps to create singlemindedness by turning off the mind which is how the techniques become second nature. This is the class where students develop a solid foundation of ukemi skills.

Advanced

Advanced class offers depth and breadth to a student’s training. In this class, the student will have the opportunity to negotiate more complex attacks and utilize more highly developed ukemi skills. The pace can be fast and the movements spontaneous depending on the instructor’s emphasis. Therefore, Advanced class is only open to students who have obtained the rank of fourth Kyu or greater.

Morning Practice - Asakeiko

O’Sensei often had classes before the break of dawn because he believed that the Earth's energy is the most abundant in the early morning hours. We follow that tradition so that our students can begin their day with a fresh start. These classes are popular for the busy professional or for people who want to start their day off right. Monday and Wednesday classes are Open level and Friday classes are Fundamental level. Showers are available, but we ask that students bring their own towel and amenities.

Open Practice

The dojo offers this hour as a free time so that students can come and practice whatever they want. There is technically no instruction given at this time, but it is supervised by an instructor who provides guidance if requested. This class is especially helpful for anyone preparing for an upcoming promotional exam or demonstration, as well as anyone who wants some extra training time. This class is only open to currently enrolled students of the ACLA.

The movements of Aikido are based upon the movement patterns of the katana or sword and the jo or short staff. Thus, a student must develop some level of competency in the use of those weapons on their way to gaining mastery of Aikido. Weapons class is open to all levels. Students should bring their own weapons. Please consult with the teacher or a senior student before purchasing weapons as there are many different styles of weapons.
